Blackknife
When Rich left Modulus Graphite in 2000, he officially launched Hoeg Guitars, carrying forward everything he’d learned about building world-class instruments. One of the first projects was the Blackknife — inspired by the iconic guitar Bobby Weir played in the ’80s. Rich called Bobby to make sure he was cool with it. His response? “Sure, go ahead.” Rich mentioned these wouldn’t have the graphite neck — instead, he’d be using mahogany with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Bobby just laughed and said, “They’ll probably sound better!”
